TIZIMIN

Historical
Tizimin, means "Lugar del Tapir" (place of tapir) the foundation date is not known for sure. But in 1550 the captain Sebastian Burgos conquered this territory. In 1841 he passed from villa to villa and it was not until 1922 that became a town. Tizim was ruled by Dr.Francisco Luna Kan, who officially appointed city.

Geography
Located only 160 kilometers northwest of the city of Merida. The largest municipality on the coast of Golf of Mexico, it has an area of 413,237 hectares. It borders with the state of Quintana Roo in the east and it lies between the towns of Temozon, Calotmul, Espita, Sucila, Panaba y Rio Lagartos.

Climate
The climate is warm and humid with average temperates 25c, the sea breezes calms the hot weather and the winds from the south and west. Eastern rains fall at the time of June or October.

Biodiversity
Flora
Dominate: Cedar, Jabin and other deutoxide good quality for use in the timber industry. It has fertile land capable of producing all kinds of fruits of warm soil.

Fauna
Its forest are still many animals that are endangered Such as, squirrels, monkey, tigers, gopher and number of reptiles and birds. Among insects commonly found honey pot wasp, mosquito,fire ants. On the shores of which there are plenty of flamingoes and other seabirds.

Demographics and Religion
According to the INEGI 2010 census Tizimin had a population of 73,138 inhabitants, in a predominantly catholic.

Economy
The economically active population of the municipality amounted to 21,419 people, 21,280 of which are occupied and is presented as follows. 39% is devoted to agriculture, livestock, hunting and fishing, 20% mining, petroleum manufacturing, construction and electricity. 40% trade, tourism and services.

Culture
Annual mind conducts agricultural fair, livestock, industrial and artisanal in Tizimin, as part of the celebrations in honor of Santos Reyes. The festivities begin on December 29 conclude on January 6 next year. Festival honoring the virgin of Candelaria, 28 to january 31.

For the festivities they make an Altar for the saints and love ones, whom past the way. They offer food of there best liked, Chicken, corn atole, hot chocolate. In regional parties the inhabitants dance Las Jaranas, competing among participants.

Gastronomy
Cuisine is prepared with corn, pork, chicken, deer with hot salsa havanera. Main dishes are, Frijol con Puerco, caya con huevo, puchero de gallina, queso relleno, salbutes, panuchos, pipian de venado, papadzules, longaniza, cochinita pibil, joroches, mucbi pollos, primes and tamales.

The traditional sweets that are made are yuca con miel, pumpkin, sweet potato, coconut, mazapan de pepita de calabaza, arepas and more.

The typical drinks are xtabentun, balche, pozole, coconut, horchata, atole and other fresh fruit waters from the region.

Attractions
Tizimin exist in the former convent church of Santos Reyez from VXII century, Convent and temple of San Francisco from XVI century. In the archaeological ruins stand Dzonot Ake, the palmar Chunhuele, Xlacab, Panaba, Haltunchen and Xuencal.
